It would have ... That would have been a great move. It would have allowed the kids to move on with the task on their own. Reminds me of when I taught writing and there were kids who, because they were afraid to spell a word incorrectly, had a hard time putting their thoughts to paper. So I would say, "Spell it the best way you can and circle it, and move on." Allowed them an acknowledgement that they might not be right.Joe Schwartzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02304083254248927187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1907702537884089718.post-4498884243641086972015-03-24T14:41:16.517-07:002015-03-24T14:41:16.517-07:00I must look into Open Middle!I must look into Open Middle!Mr Gregghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15114830266540886842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1907702537884089718.post-67981966328683206842015-03-24T14:40:40.469-07:002015-03-24T14:40:40.469-07:00I love how open the task is - chosen fractions, ch...I love how open the task is - chosen fractions, chosen position - with such a simple but firm constraint.

I might well have shown the way to see which is the bigger fraction too. But, reflecting, I wonder if it might be possible in a similar lesson to say, look, just mark on what you know and put the other two on top of a question mark where you think they are roughly and we'll talk about it later? And give it a bigger moment in the life of the class?

Mr Gregghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15114830266540886842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1907702537884089718.post-11505892321929633462015-03-13T05:22:53.658-07:002015-03-13T05:22:53.658-07:00Still waiting - our other activity went over (for ...Still waiting - our other activity went over (for worthwhile reasons!)John Goldenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18212162438307044259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1907702537884089718.post-50833799393518382212015-03-12T18:42:11.521-07:002015-03-12T18:42:11.521-07:00That sounds like a very intriguing activity. Have a metaphorical hat full of rational numbers and students take turns trying to get other students to say them. Leave up previous tries nd label them after they're scored. I especially love the questions that arose. Now way to answer them without involving MP3 and MP6. Thanks so much for this inspiring reflection into your practice.
